August Mixtape: An Elaborate Dream

For August, the mixtape theme was a bit more special than usual. My mixtape partner got to choose which artist in my last.fm top 10 i should create a 'crash course' for her for, and i got the option to do it either for Duran Duran (that would've been too easy), Patrick Wolf (might still do that one) or Nine Inch Nails - which seemed and turned out to be the most interesting one for myself as well. Trent Reznor's band has been quite prolific the last few years, and i had a hard time immersing myself fully in the music, also because those last few albums, on first listenings, didn't really open themselves up... which they did now that i've had to listen to them for this mixtape!
I chose to pick the more poppier songs from NIN's back catalogue, mainly because for anyone not familiar with their sound, it would be a softer transition. What surprised me though, that there were plenty of easy accessible songs to choose from... so NIN isn't as radical in their sound as even i thought. Plus, their more aggresive songs all pretty much sound the same, so in my opinion it gives a better overview the many facets of NIN's sound by putting the 'hits' in a mix than the 'underground' songs. And what surprised me too, is how consistent in sound NIN has been for over 20 years almost. You could question the production on a track like Sin (from their first album Pretty Hate Machine), but everything after that could just as well have been recorded in 2008 or in 1992. That's could be called quite an accomplishment! Tracklisting is like this:
Something I Can Never Have
March Of The Pigs
Only
Sin
Closer
The Day The World Went Away
Meet Your Master
Lights in the Sky
La Mer
Into The Void
1,000,000
